Employee Programs/Benefits

Knife River and our parent corporation, MDU Resources Group, Inc., provide numerous opportunities to qualified individuals for growth and advancement, both professionally and personally. The following are just some of the programs and benefits available to our employees.

Award Programs

Each year MDU Resources and its subsidiary companies recognize efforts that go beyond the call of duty, protect the environment or showcase ingenuity. The various awards carry cash and/or MDU Resources common stock prizes. Employee efforts are recognized and appreciated.

Employee Development

MDU Resources supports and encourages employee development through a number of corporate initiatives. It offers a formalized approached for career development planning and may provide financial support for conferences, education and training that is beneficial to both employees and the company. In addition, online education is becoming more readily available throughout the company.

CEO's Conference

Each year, MDU Resources' chief executive officer selects nominated individuals for participation in the CEO's Conference. As part of a three-member team, the group is assigned a topic related to the corporation's goals. The team researches the topic and presents its findings to senior management from the corporation's major business units.

Mentoring Program

The "People Building People" mentoring program pairs as many eligible employees as possible with a mentor who is a senior manager or executive in the corporation. The program provides employees the opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership skills; gain exposure to other areas of the corporation; and focus on career goals and the steps to achieve those goals.

MDU Resources Foundation

While MDU Resources' strategic goals are to be a provider of choice, an investment of choice and an employer of choice, its philanthropic goal is to be a neighbor of choice. The MDU Resources Foundation provides annual grants to qualifying agencies in the following categories: Health and Human Services; Education; Civic and Community Activities; Culture and Art; and Environment.

The Foundation sponsors an Employee Scholarship Program that is designed to encourage and recognize outstanding academic achievement of the children and spouses of employees. It also will match employee personal contributions to educational institutions (elementary, secondary, higher education) with a contribution equal to 50 percent of employee contributions between $100 and $500.

National Accounts

One of the many benefits of being part of a corporation the size of MDU Resources is its purchasing power. In many cases, the company is able to use its purchasing power to broker discounts for its employees when they make personal purchases on such items as computers, cellular phones, office supplies, auto parts and more. In addition, the Vehicle Discount Program allows employees to purchase new Ford, General Motors or DaimlerChrysler vehicles at a discounted price.

Diversity Council

The Diversity Council was formed in 1999 and given the task of providing awareness of the issues facing women in the workplace and business solutions to be considered to make the corporation a Great Place to Work®. It is the opinion that the initiatives brought forth by this group will not only make the corporation a better place to work for women but also for all employees.
