Knife River Earns Prestigious Safety Award

BISMARCK, N.D. — March 14, 2023 — Knife River Corporation proudly announces that it has earned the Liberty Mutual Risk Management Excellence Award – a prestigious honor that has been granted fewer than 20 times in more than 100 years.

The award specifically highlights the unique efforts at the Knife River Training Center to promote safety in the construction industry.

“Knife River has demonstrated its utmost commitment to the safety of the construction industry and innovation with its state-of-the-art training center,” said Jane Theuer, manager of Risk Control Field Operations for Liberty Mutual Insurance. “The cutting-edge facility sets an example for the entire workforce, shaping the future of safety training. We are thrilled to honor Knife River’s impressive approach to proactive loss prevention, and their dedication to the community.”

The Knife River Training Center opened in the spring of 2022 in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. It is designed to build skills and help people advance their careers by providing a classroom education accompanied by hands-on experience. Classes include CDL training and equipment operation in real-world settings, but behind a closed gate and away from live traffic.

The facility features an 80,000-square-foot temperature-controlled dome, an attached 16,000-square-foot classroom building and an outdoor training facility on 230 acres. Classes are open to Knife River employees as well as the general public and other companies that want to utilize the facility and the curriculum to advance their own teams.

“We built the Training Center to promote construction as a career of choice and to help people develop their skills in a safe environment,” said Knife River President and CEO Brian Gray. “The ability to provide equipment and truck training in a controlled space – in addition to all the safety aspects that were designed into the center – underscores our commitment to truly being a people-first company.”
